Recently I started reading “The Travels of Marco Polo”, the great account of Marco Polo’s travels through Asia in the late 1200s. It’s really amazing. As the introduction to the edition I’m reading points out, nowadays more people have probably read “Invisible Cities” — Italo Calvino’s surreal metamorphosis of Polo — than Polo’s book itself. (Calvino’s work is equally incredible.) I’m reading William Marsden’s 1818 translation.
