Lovecraft Sketch MWF: The Secret Life of Zoogs
Aka, “Why Zoogs Make Worse Pets than Cats”. This one was just something that’s been stuck on my mind for awhile. Those lovable zoogs! Why don’t they get their own story? Why do they get shafted in “Dream-Quest” by Randolph Carter’s cat-biased imperialistic meddling?!
Since I posted this week’s Sarnath page on Wednesday instead of Tuesday, this installment of the “Monday-Wednesday-Friday Lovecraft Sketch” reaches you on a lovely but inappropriate Thursday. Come back tomorrow for another sketch… this one not of zoogs, but nobody’s perfect.
Thanks for this. I did feel that Carter seemed to treat the Zoogs rather unfairly, not to mention he probably broke the treaties that he had made with them previously in doing so.
As I understand the morphology of the Zoogs where are the facial tentacles? They are important in how Zoogs communicate. Brown and slippery with fluttering faces are the Zoogs. I picture them somewhat like a mongoose.
Aaah, but in the original text of Dream-Quest they *have* no facial tentacles! ;) That was something the Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game authors came up with.
The fluttering was there though one could say they were long whiskers not thin tentacles.
There is no fire or christian hell in lovecraft…
@Rodrigo — I know, it’s kind of a cheat… BUT!! There’s all kinds of European black magic superstitions mentioned in “The Other Gods”! -_- So who knows if there isn’t some kind of Hell in the Dreamlands. At least that’s my excuse.
