The Beast in the Cave, Page 6
My cup runneth over with artwork! It’s a really busy month. I’m currently working on:
* several awesome but very time-consuming freelance assignments
* a new website (well, actually, a friend is designing it, but I’m digging up art assets)
* a 16-page comic for Anything That Loves: Comics Beyond Gay and Straight (go help Kickstart it!)
* a card game
* preparing for the Stumptown Comics Fest in Portland, Oregon next weekend (April 27-28)! I hope you can make it!
Hopefully sometime in the middle of all that I’ll get a chance to read Gary Myers’ The Country of the Worm, his collection of Dreamlands short stories, which I bought on Kindle the other day. I can’t wait! But now, tonight, I’m tired, so I’m off to sleep as soundly as if a sharp-angled bit of limestone just stove in my head.
NEXT UPDATE: Monday!
Hello Jason,
I’m an old lady moving to a senior park. Sounds boring – well humph! Anyway, I was going through the things I saved over the years and I came across Freddy Mock Man By Jason Thompson, the first page of one of your amazingly precocious works. I met you when you were about seven years old, I’m guessing. I was working in a summer classroom of gifted kids at Sonoma State who were putting out a publication. You were the youngest kid, and as you might have guessed, the most talented. I’ve always been an admirer of cartoons, from Little Lulu to R. Crumb and beyond, so I wondered if you had continued with your cartooning, and sure enough! I haven’t perused your recent work, and look forward to seeing what you’ve been doing. It’s a rough world out there for cartoonists and many give up, but you didn’t!

Dear ML — Thanks for the comment! I can’t believe you saved a copy of a Freddy Mock Man comic! I wish I could remember what I’d drawn for the publication; I don’t even know if I was going through my “science fiction” phase or my “Dungeons & Dragons” phase (or… shudder… my “Garfield” phase?). Freddy Mock Man eventually evolved a rather complicated story, but I haven’t drawn his adventures in quite awhile, although I still draw his compatriots. :)
Thank you for tracking me down! I’ll have to look for the publication the next time I’m at my parents’ house where all my boxes of old papers are kept. I really appreciate the memory, and I’m sure nowhere you go will ever be boring!! :)
