The Beast in the Cave, Page 3
I mentioned that “The Beast in the Cave” was drawn in a rush of a few days, much quicker and rougher than my usual work on “Dream-Quest” etc., but this is the only page I feel a little guilty about. But hey, the ‘character in the dark in a completely dark panel’ is a respected tradition in the comics industry! Really…! …In any case, I promise that things like backgrounds will return in the subsequent pages.
I’ve been busy the last few weeks, and things are just getting busier; luckily, it’s all artwork-related business, so it’s a huge pleasure. Most immediately, in the next few days I need to finish up my 16-page story for Anything That Loves: Comics Beyond Gay and Straight. If you haven’t checked out the Kickstarter project yet, please do; it’s a book with an incredible lineup of creators and I’m really happy to have the chance to draw something for it. Also, if they reach the $25,000 goal on the Kickstarter, my page rate for the comic will go up, so I’ll be blunt: please go and give them all your money. You know you want to! And of course, please come back on Thursday for the next page!

I don’t know if Lovecraft pioneered the idea of “reverse evolution” but he certainly got good use of it.
Hey, if black panels are good enough for Paul Grist and Mike Mignola…..All kidding aside, I like the look and design of the panels on this page. They’re very effective in a creepy way and that’s what the story is all about, right?
I really love drawing caves, although my backgrounds in this story aren’t nearly as random and fractal and finely detailed as real caves can be. But I’m drawing some more caves as I type this, so I’m working on it!
I actually don’t mind this panel at all. It is supposed to be dark, after all.
Also, caves are fascinating.
