The White Ship, Page 12
And so ends “The White Ship.” I really like this little story, and I like the story which probably inspired it, Lord Dunsany’s “Idle Days on the Yann.” “Yann” is perhaps the more mature tale, since it doesn’t have an obvious message and is simply a prose-poem of wandering downriver through jungles and grassy meadows and past strange cities. But they’re both among my favorites.
And now, with “The White Ship” out of the way, it’s time for me to unveil my next Lovecraft adaptation… “Celephais!” I’m not going to be able to draw this one at a rate of two pages a week, but I’ll try to upload a page a week till it’s completed. Thank you for reading, and see you next week!
NEXT UPDATE: March 15!
Thank you! This was very enjoyable, though I have to admit I liked High House better, simply because I prefer that story.
Have youconsidered adapting one of his mythos-based stories? Mountain of Madness or The Dunwich Horror?
Hate to be an ass, but with the posting of this comic, are you going to resume The Stiff?
@Brian – It’s a totally reasonable question. My first priorities are getting King of RPGs volume 2 out the door on May 24th and drawing Celephais, which will be 12 pages long (three months at a rate of one page a week). After that… I don’t want to commit to a date here, but I have been thinking about The Stiff.
@Janne – Not really. I like both those stories a lot but I’d rather focus on his dream stories. I know someone else will adapt his Mythos stories into comics eventually.
I’ve bern reading these for a while, and i hear talk of other dream quest comics. Are those on this site or another? Are they only in hard copy or something? Because i want to see some of your other work on this but i simply can’t.
@Andrew – They’re only in hard copy, but I’m hoping to reprint them soon!
Thanks for response!
Coincidentally, I unconsciously purchased Lovecraft’s short stories which has this one, after finishing reading your interpretation.
For some reason, certain panels in this adaptation remind me of M. C. Escher. Panel #4, in particular, put me in mind of his mezzotint “Crystal”. It isn’t your style of drawing so much as the combination of realistic detail coexisting side-by-side with the fantastic and otherworldly. It’s a potent mixture, Jason!
I had a brainstorm.
While we the readers wait for you to resume drawing Stiff, can you post the old one? Purely for nostalgic reason. Or are you going to reboot the comic?
@Ken – Thank you! I love Escher!
@Brian – Good idea. Actually, I would have to reboot the comic, since the old pages aren’t online anymore anyway (unless someone has copied them somewhere). So I’d have to re-post everything in any case.
A quick update on my current project — I’m drawing “Celephais” right now and the first page will be up on Wednesday or Thursday with new pages weekly thereafter. I’m sorry I’m running late, but it is coming along; I’m just drawing the pages a little out of order.
I really love this story as well, your adaptation of it specifically. It hits all the right notes.
I also really like the use of colour. (well, it’s greyscale, but nevertheless)
