Celephais, Page 2
Better late than never, here is the latest page of Celephais! Unfortunately, with a lot of work over the next two months, it’s looking unlikely that I’ll be able to draw Celephais once a week as promised. But on the bright side, (1) I’ve already drawn part of page 3 and (2) I’m really excited about working on this series. It feels like coming home.
This page may need a little more messing around with screentone and so on, but for now, this is it. I’ll go back and add more plaster and spackle later. I was thinking of the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby” — specifically, the sequence animated in “Yellow Submarine” — as I drew this. I wasn’t able to fit in this line from the original story — “When as children we listen and dream, we think but half-formed thoughts, and when as men we try to remember, we are dulled and prosaic with the poison of life” — but it was also echoing in my head.

Lovecraft would have been appalled at those two hooligans stomping a defenseless feline! Again, I regret that my screen can’t accomodate the entirety of the first panel; however, having to scroll down simulates the camera panning in a motion picture–a fortuitous stroke of luck. This page is full of fascinating details–the (thankfully) barely glimpsed guests at the dinner table, the ominously blank-socketted eyes of the parents, the familiar-looking doll on the bedside bureau. The penultimate panel is my favorite–the boy’s groping hand obscuring his expression (save for one staring eye) is dramatic and ominous.

There’s this odd square pattern on the grey tones – is that supposed to be there?
So far, this story seems very autobiographical. I also love how you drew the backyards of those houses…

The square pattern is probably a side effect of the way I did the graytones for this page. You’re right, it doesn’t look so good, I should probably fix it. I’m working on the next pages first though, so please endure my bad-looking tones for awhile till I get back to them and adjust them. -_-;;
